Solar Eclipse May 20, 2012

The Annular Solar Eclipse that took place on May 20, 2012 was quite a sight to behold.  I was able to catch a few good shots of the event.  The one below were included by the Phoenix New Times in their slideshow of eclipse pictures.

Polaroid Automatic 100

I have contracted Polaroid fever! I picked up an Automatic 100 because it has a tripod socket and can use the same lens accessories as my 440.
The Automatic 100 is the first of Polaroid's pack film cameras. It was introduced in 1963 and produced until 1966; it was replaced by the "200" series Land cameras in 1967. While there were 32 different Automatic Land Camera models produced between 1963 and 1977, the Automatic 100 has the same picture taking abilities as the "top of the line" Automatic 450 introduced in 1971.

  • Lens: 114mm f/8.8 3-element glass
  • Shutter: Electronic; 10 seconds - 1/1200
  • Separate window view/rangefinder assembly (has a hinged base-- flips up for use and is held in place with a magnetic catch-- folds down for storage and fits inside the camera's plastic cover)
  • Viewfinder has projected framelines and automatic parallax compensation.
  • Aperture-priority automatic exposure only
  • Has settings for film speeds of 75, 150, 300, and 3000 ASA.
  • Has "scene selector" switch which gives choice of two different aperture settings for each film speed setting; lens can be used at full aperture with 3000 ASA film.
  • Has exposure compensation dial with range of -1/+2 stops ("Lighten/Darken" control).
  • Has metal body and metal shutter/lens housing
  • (and importantly for me) Has tripod socket
  • Leather carrying strap

I love the non-folding pack film cameras, but I can't get film for my Zip. I decided to get a colorpack camera that I can use Fuji FP-100C or FP-3000B with. This one came with corroded batteries and glue from the case lining on the lens. I did some scrubbing and it has cleaned up great. I'll be shooting it soon.

Pictures taken with my mother's Polaroid 440 on her birthday. She would have been 72 this year if she had been able to survive the breast cancer.  My friend Dawn recently lost her mother as well.  Our mothers shared the birthday of April 20th so we went out to dinner with our friends so that everyone could celebrate those that have gone on ahead of us.  Thanks everyone for turning out.

My Mother's Polaroid 440

My Mother's Polaroid Land Camera 440 loaded with FP-100C (finally!). I am going to be shooting it today, 4/20, as it my Mother's birthday; she would have been 72 this year. She lost her battle with cancer in 2007. My housemate Dawn's mother's birthday is also April 20th. Her mother passed away last year. We are going to support each other today.

I'll be posting pictures from this camera soon.

Color Magazine Portfolio Contest 2011

I entered the Color Magazine Portfolio Contest for 2011. While I did not win, I congratulate all of the winners for their very amazing work.  Just entering the contest was very educational for me.  I had to be very editorial about my work and chose those images that I thought were artistically, visually, and technically strong.  Two of the images that I submitted do appear on the Color Magazine website.  Click on the images to see them on the Color Magazine website.

I hope to enter more contests this year.  Please visit my website to enjoy these and my other images.

Another Arizona Sunrise

Being out of work right now is difficult.  I want to be working, but my health is limiting what I feel I can do.  I also don't know what I want to be doing.  What is consistent is the photography.  I want to be doing something with my photography as far as earning a living.  Well, more that on the matter.

In the meantime, please enjoy this photograph.

First Light 2012

I got myself out of bed at 7:00 am MST so that I could get the first light of the new year.  I was happy to do it and happy with the results of my effort.  More efforts and results to follow in the upcoming year of 2012.
